It's amazing to me how many people come into our office with neck problems and they're skeptical about whether upper cervical care can actually help neck problems. The upper cervical spine is the neck, it's the top of the neck. But even lower neck issues, upper back issues, pain that goes down the arm, it all comes from the neck. Now what happens is, it’s all about positioning of where those upper bones are because where those bones are changing the position of the head, even if the bone angles upwards or downwards, if it drops your head down, the brain's going do what it's got to do to balance it. And it might take the curve out of your neck, it might force your head forward which in turn's going to put a lot of stress on your neck and your upper shoulders. So it's all about the upper cervical bones because the head sits on top. Your head sits on top of the Atlas bone, the first bone in your neck. Anywhere that bone goes, it changes the position of your head. So if it slides one way, it's going to lean the head that way.
And then, to compensate, it’s going to push your head over so it's all about keeping that brain balance. Anywhere the atlas goes, the brain, the head goes with it. If you look in the mirror and close your eyes, turn your head left and right, a lot of times that you will see one ear may be a little higher than the other or one shoulder may be a little lower than the other. There's compensation going on. That's your body's way of trying to get the brain balanced. So what do you think happens when the head tilts and the shoulder drops, it changes the biomechanics of your neck. And the muscles in your neck are working overtime. The joints can start to wear down prematurely, it can start to think the discs that actually go down, that affect the nerves that go down into the arms. So if you've ever had neck problems or you have reoccurring neck problems, pain, pain down the arm, even headaches that come from the back of the neck. Find an upper cervical doctor near you. Let them check you out. There's a really, really good chance that an upper cervical problem at the top of your neck is causing your neck pain.
